Episode 7 Part 2
Hello and welcome to the Success by 1,000 Wins Podcast. The show that encourages you to succeed with your money one win at a time. (property of @successby1000wins) I’m your host, Michael Kopans. And I invite you to join me each week as I give you actionable wins for your finances that help you to reach a millionaire dollar net worth. I have studied and learned from the greats. Money principles which I have implemented into my own life.
The millionaires have spoken and I have listened. The clues are out there. They have left the trail of breadcrumbs. The principles for financial success have been carved in stone. And they are achieved by one win at a time.
My belief is that winning, or wins, helps us succeed with our money. Sometimes it takes 10 wins, sometimes it takes 100 wins, sometimes 1,000. Succeeding takes consistency and an obsession to succeed, an obsession to carry on even when things get hard. Even when things seem to be going backwards or they seem like you haven’t moved forward in awhile.
As I’ve said before, I don’t want you to stop, I don’t want you to give up because YOU don’t want to give up. Sometimes we fall down, so do I. I promise you I have seen some LOW times in my life. And we need to get back up again. What was that famous line in Batman? Why do we fall down Bruce? So we can learn to get back up again. When you fall, I want to be there to help and encourage you back up.
This is part 2, of episode 7 – $1,000 emergency fund in 30 days. If you did NOT listen to part 1, please go back and do so, I’ll leave the link in the show notes.
It not only sets the framework and gives the introduction but kicks off the first 4-5 ideas for creating extra income over the next 30 days.
Please, be sure to go back and listen as I explain the 6 rules I used to sort of guide my decision making in what I would share in this list and the expectations I recommend you set for yourself so that in the next 30 days you are maximizing your efforts, getting the largest profit you can earn for the extra work you will be doing.
I suspect you may even get started and not want to give up the extra income as SO many of the ideas I share are easy, work on your own schedule and your own terms, type of jobs.
I failed to mention in episode one that at one point in mine and my wife’s journey to becoming debt free and eventually where we are now of accumulating wealth, we had begun a side hustle that in my opinion was very successful.
My wife had begun a side hustle of home decor items. From beautiful baskets to decorated old-fashioned windows.
To be honest, I am not sure where this began but, at one point we had begun creating stove covers. It was a little slow at first but, every time we sold one it was for 50 plus dollars and it only took 25 to 30 dollars to create.
I’ll never forget, 3 Christmas’s ago we literally were requested to make 50 stove covers simply by posting on Facebook that we were doing this.
The price tag rose drastically as we began having more detailed requests and customizations and even had to team up with a friend for the stencils we were adding. I remember selling quite a few for 80 to 100 dollars.
That was an extremely profitable month and a GREAT way to kick off securing our beginner emergency fund of $1,000.
Okay, so, today I want to continue the list of 30 plus ideas for creating a $1,000 starter emergency fund.
Maybe you’re beginning your debt free journey and looking to give yourself a little cushion between you and the things life throws your way.
Who knows, perhaps you’re even here looking for ideas to fully fund a 6 month emergency fund. You’ve paid off all of your debts and you’re looking to really create some space between you and the emergencies we face such as a broken down car, AC issues and much more.
I believe we left off on number 5 from last episode, if I recall correctly so, we’ll call this number 6.
But first let me add, if you need to reach me with questions, perhaps you’re looking to sponsor the show, or maybe you have a question you’d like me to answer on an episode, you can contact me at michaelbkopans@gmail.com.
Also, my goal is to reach one million people and help them achieve a million dollar net worth. The more that know about the podcast the faster we can reach this goal.
So please be sure to leave a review, again I’ll leave that in the show notes.
And be sure to subscribe to the podcast so you can be reminded each week that a new episode has come out.
Okay, if you’re ready, let’s continue. $1,000 emergency fund in 30 days. Over 30 ideas for creating extra income.
Number 6, virtual assistant. This one is loaded and becoming VERY popular! A virtual assistant could help manage a social media account, answer emails, write or type content for an individual, perhaps help with a website, take pictures for content. The ideas are endless.
Number 7, cook for someone in your area. To me this one screams elderly. Perhaps you are a good cook and have some time in the evenings or maybe in the mornings before you go off to work. You could offer to provide some meals for some elderly in the area.
Back in my gym days when I was a personal trainer, I know QUITE a few clients who would have paid good money to have meals provided for them during their weight loss journey.
Number 8, do someone’s laundry. I heard about this one about a month ago. Apparently you actually go to someone’s house to pick up their laundry and you commit to having it back by a certain date.
This one is a little TOO personal for me. I can’t imagine having a complete stranger washing my… clothes but… I could see some people needing this.
Number 9, stand in line for someone. HEAR…ME…OUT on this one. I think I heard this out of a book I read this summer. There are actually people that you can PAY to stand in line for you for things that take a LONG time.
For example, you’re standing in line for tickets to a show and it’s going to take several hours. You don’t want to wait in line so, you pay them to hold your spot and they contact you as your spot is getting closer and closer to the front. You get in your car and resume your spot.
It’s…genius!
Especially in busy cities like New York. I’d imagine this would be a VERY popular job.
Christmas shopping. Some waits in line for you Black Friday to hold your spot.
Man. Who thinks of these things!
Number 10, clean houses. There are NEVER enough people doing this job. Endless amounts of homes where people need help cleaning. I’d imagine you’d only have to do 4 or 5 houses and bam, you’re at your $1,000.
Number 11, mow yards. This one’s too easy. Post on a Facebook group that you’re mowing yards. Specify your capabilities. Obviously you’re not going out purchasing a commercial mower.
Number 12, rake or blow leaves. Man! When I was back living just outside of Asheville. With all of the trees. The INSANE amounts of leaves. I’d imagine you could make a KILLING blowing leaves, perhaps bagging leaves. Halling them off if you have a truck to do so.
Number 13, mulch yards. Again, if you have a vehicle suited for this, you offer to pick up a mound of mulch in the spring and mulch someone’s yard. Be careful with this one. Be sure THEY pay for the mulch so you don’t lose out on money if they change their mind when you show up with hundreds of dollars worth of mulch.
Number 14, this is one of my favorites! Teach…your…skill! Are you a teacher? Tutor. Are you skilled at the piano? Piano lessons. Are you skilled at swimming? Teach swimming lessons. Music, singing, instruments. Sports. There’s a market out there for people to train other people’s kids at the sport of choice – perhaps basketball or soccer.
Offer one on ones. Keep them to 30 minutes a session. BIG market for this I’d imagine.
Number 15, Uber drive is obviously a popular side hustle right now.
Along with that number 16, Uber eats. Deliver people’s food. I like this one because, a little small talk and friendly chatting could lead to a nice tip upon arrival.
Number 17, help others move! MAN! Wish I had taken advantage of this one when I was just a LITTLE younger. Put it out there on a Facebook group in your area that you’re available and able to help someone move. Maybe even pack!
You show up and help them load a truck full of their furniture and boxes. Again, offer by the hour for this one. I know when we moved the past 2 to 3 times, we had movers come to our house 2 to 3 days in a row for 7 hours a day. Some good money to be made!
Number 18, babysitting. Yes! It’s still a HUGE need in the world! This one could be in the evenings so couples can go on a date nights. Perhaps you stay home with your own kids and can pick up 1 or 2 kids to babysit while mom and dad go to work?
BIG need for babysitters!
Number 19, donate plasma. I’m not going to talk like I know a ton about this. A buddy of mine did this for several months and I was pretty amazed at how much money they were giving him each time he showed up.
Number 20, watch an elderly person. Again, maybe on the local facebook group, let them know if they have an elderly parent that needs a little supervision in the evenings, perhaps on the weekends, that you’d be available outside of your day job.
Obviously not someone that needs extensive medical care, unless you happen to be a nurse but, someone who is mobile but just needs a little supervision.
Number 21, create something. Okay, I want to stop on this one and explain a little. As I mentioned in part 1 of episode 7, when I shared my 6 rules for what you should be looking for, I emphasized not doing work that requires spending money. This is a LITTLE bit of an exception to that rule.
Please…do NOT go out and spend a $1,000 in order to try to make a thousand. When my wife and I made the stove covers, we would spend $25 and in return we made 50 to 75. We’d reinvest the profits to make the next one, then the next one.
We NEVER went out and bought $500 worth of materials and then began selling.
If you do this and create something, take it slow. Make sure it is going to sell. Maybe consider charging them half the cost prior to purchasing the materials and dedicating the labor.
But if you are creative like my wife or you’re handy in the wood working room, create something. Especially decor. It’s a HUGE market and easy to sell on Facebook market place these days.
Number 22, odd jobs. Just put it out there on the Facebook group in your area – willing and able to do odd jobs. Who KNOWS what people may offer to pay you to do around their house. Maybe it’s pick up groceries. Perhaps wash their cars, clean the house. Who knows!
Number 23, have a yard sale. Sell the crap that put you in DEBT! Now, be careful with this one. Don’t just give stuff away for pennies on a dollar. I know for years we would have a TON of baby clothes at the end of a season that the kids had out grown.
We had a yearly consignment event where you could sell baby things. We would make a GREAT profit selling here, verses attempting to sell at a yard sale or even a local consignment.
Know where to sell. Sell things in the right place. Perhaps it’s a yard sale. Perhaps facebook marketplace. Local consignment. Ebay. Etsy. Who knows.
Number 24, let’s talk about your current job. Get over time at work. If you have a job that permits. There are many jobs out there, such as retail where, even if you can’t get work at your location, you may be able to pick up shifts at other locations.
Nurses. Come on! You’re ALWAYS a high needs profession. Pick up overtime and extra shifts.
Number 25, a side hustle. This falls somewhat into the arena of creating things however, I’m always amazed at the work people offer or services that make a TON of money. What are you skilled at or capable at?
Perhaps you start with your hobbies and skills and see what is a need in that area where you can make money helping to fill that need.
Number 26, help a local business owner. Heck. This doesn’t even need to be local. Perhaps you connect to someone online or through a professional group you are a part of.
Go looking on linked in even. This is similar to a virtual assistant I suppose but, contact a local business owner and see if there is work they need help with for a few hours a week. You’d be surprised what may come up.
Everyone is so over worked and desperately in need of help. Who knows, maybe they say, I need a house cleaner. Maybe someone to answer phone calls or email. Maybe to pick up some food for them. Maybe they need a scheduler, someone to schedule appointments. Just reach out and see.
Number 27, this is moving away from jobs to looking internally with the budget. As I said, if you can make $1,000 worth of cuts, this would be ideal to the stress and burden of picking up extra work. Not that working is a bad thing.
Where can you make cuts in the budget? Start with out to eat. How’s that going? Spending $500 a month on groceries AND another $500 on going out to eat?
Secondly, the cell phone. I can’t TELL you how many times I’ve been going through life, minding my own business with my verizon phone plan, I decide to pop in and ask them how I can cut back on my plan a little. They notice a special going on that is not only cheaper than my current plan yet offers more.
Several times they’ve noticed I was paying on something that I shouldn’t have been for 6 months to a year. That reimbursement was nice.
The cable bill. Gentlemen, don’t get me started on this one. You do NOT need 10,000 stations. You don’t need everything cable can offer. You don’t need all sports access. Who has TIME to watch all of the TV that could be offered?
My wife and I haven’t had cable in YEARS and we are doing just fine with life. We have netflix, disney plus is included in our cell phone plan I believe and my wife just signed up for Hulu at $2/month for a year. That’s it! Occasionally I get youtube tv for a month to access some sports during the fun part of the season.
If you are paying 200 or more dollars a month for cable, number one, get a life! Secondly, it’s NOT worth it! Cut back!
Next, subscriptions, go through your bank statement, talk to your spouse about subscriptions yall can cut back on.
Amazon. Go through your bank statement AGAIN and see how much you are spending on Amazon. Then go back to Amazon’s website and see what you are actually getting and access whether it’s all worth $1,000 a month for Mr. Bezos to get richer and richer.
Don’t be a consumer yall, be a producer. Don’t buy it, sell it!
I’ll save that one for another episode.
And lastly, but probably not lastly, groceries. I am NOT the one that coupons or deeply analyzes my grocery spending. I don’t have to at this phase in my life but…
There are plenty of ways to save money on groceries. Could depend on the store you’re shopping at. Maybe what week the sales are on that get you stuff you need.
Maybe you need to have a grocery list instead of just randomly shopping for stuff you don’t need.
Perhaps you actually choose meals for the week and ONLY get what you’re going to use.
I’d imagine there is a LOT of waste out there.
So, make cuts! I’m sure I’m missing some areas that would benefit you but, that’s a good start.
Number 28, if you own a power washer, announce on your neighborhood or local Facebook groups that you are willing to power wash a house, a driveway or patio. Obviously be honest about your capabilities, not professing to be a professional here, but…
Number 29, have a chain saw, offer to cut up a fallen tree. I can’t tell you in north carolina how many trees fell, ALL the time And I know often it requires a professional and the safety measures they take but…
Let me tell you. I had a MASSIVE tree fall in my yard a year ago during the wee hours of the morning. My neighbor got our saws out and worked on that sucker for WEEKS!
I was busy with work and could only do a few hours each weekend to chop this thing smaller and smaller so we could just dispose of it. What I would have GIVEN to have someone do this for me!
And lastly, number 30, some hot part-time jobs – work at a restaurant, again, tips, tips, tips! Pizza delivery, again. Tips, tips, tips! Or any type of lawn care, as I’ve already mentioned. Doesn’t require a ton of equipment. A mower, trimmer perhaps.
That is it my friends. Over 30 ideas to inspire you to kick it into gear, earn extra income in the next 30 days and save up your STARTER emergency fund of 1,000 to 1500 dollars, quick!
As I said, I suspect when you begin some of these, you may not even want to stop, as you’ll find that they will aid you in the next step of your financial journey of paying off debt.
And the more income you can produce, the faster this can happen.
Hope these ideas help! I want you to win! I want you to reach a million dollar net worth in your life time. I want you to be debt free and financially free!
And it begins with this emergency fund to ward off life’s emergencies and challenges while you are progressing toward your goals.
Always remember, at the end of the day, I want you to win!
I believe in you. Someone in your life believes in you.
I know today you may feel like a loser. You aren’t the first and trust me, you won’t be the last.
But if you know how to lose guess what, you know how to win. So go out there and win my friends.
Go out there and have Success one win at a time. Go have Success…by 1,000 wins.
