FULL SHOW NOTES
Hello and welcome to the Success by 1,000 Wins Podcast. The show that encourages you to succeed with your money one win at a time. (property of @successby1000wins) I’m your host, Michael Kopans. And I invite you to join me each week as I give you actionable wins for your finances that help you to reach a millionaire dollar net worth. I have studied and learned from the greats. Money principles which I have implemented into my own life.
The millionaires have spoken and I have listened. The clues are out there. They have left the trail of breadcrumbs. The principles for financial success have been carved in stone. And they are achieved by one win at a time.
My belief is that winning, or wins, helps us succeed with our money. Sometimes it takes 10 wins, sometimes it takes 100 wins, sometimes 1,000. Succeeding takes consistency and an obsession to succeed, an obsession to carry on even when things get hard. (property of @successby1000wins) Even when things seem to be going backwards or they seem like you haven’t moved forward in awhile.
As I’ve said before, I don’t want you to stop, I don’t want you to give up because YOU don’t want to give up. Sometimes we fall down, so do I. I promise you I have seen some LOW times in my life. And we need to get back up again. What was that famous line in Batman? Why do we fall down Bruce? So we can learn to get back up again. When you fall, I want to be there to help and encourage you back up.
This is Episode #….7. I’m beginning to mix up my episodes. As I am recording this I am actually still in the process of getting Episode 6 out into the world as I’ve finished editing and now it’s time to get it onto the podcast.
I am THRILLED about today’s episode. And things are going to be a little different. While I WILL be attempting to keep my usual sarcasm and humor, today’s episode is more of a list, therefore, I am not sure how well I will do adding in my normal irritating, witty charm into the mix but, we’ll see how it goes.
I am thrilled about today’s episode for several reasons. For those of you who don’t know, I occasionally sub at my children’s schools. I have an elementary student and a middle school student.
I was subbing at my daughter’s middle school and I had about a 45 minute break and inspiration just hit me, as it often does for those who take time to seek it and time to be still, listen and receive it.
In that inspiration I decided I wanted to not only bring an episode which focused solely on one step of our financially journey, especially one that was SO important to mine and my wife’s success as we were getting started with all of this quite a few years ago now.
But, my heart also told me, hey Michael, just stay on this one for a while.
So, what I plan to do, as of this moment, we are six days into January, is to hangout on this topic – ideas for putting together a $1,000 emergency fund – for at least the remainder of January if not going slightly into February.
I want to hangout here for 30 days because, if you are in this space where you are attempting to save for an emergency and to tackle debt, I want to encourage you to do it quick!
Rip that bandaid off…quickly!
And for those of you, like me who need to hear this more forwardly spoken, especially the guys out there…you NEED to do this! You NEED to take the next 30 days, lead your household, lead your family and get $1,000 in the emergency fund in 30 days.
We are NOT being casual about this. Do it quickly, to it intentionally, do it passionately. Go HARD on this!
So, back to my subbing. As this inspiration came to me I decided to just quickly write down some ideas for you all to hopefully help you think of ways that you can either make or cut spending to quickly save $1,000. It’s easier than you think. I promise.
Came up with a minimum of 30 ideas, however, there are topics within quite a few of these ideas, so I’ll point those out as I go. I would venture to say that this podcast is presenting almost 50 ideas for how to make that money, quick!
If you have listened to any of my last few podcasts, starting at episode 4 on, I’ve changed my format. I keep things quick. I attempt to keep my episodes to 10 minutes. Therefore, if I notice this episode needing more time, we may move into a part 2.
With that being said, let’s get into it! We have a LOT to cover.
First off, I want to thank my sponsors. They are still…me myself and I. Yes, I am STILL footing the bill to bring you this episode. But hey, my wife LOVES it when I do work and offer it for free. However, if you are looking to waste your money someday and actually invest in the show, or if you need to reach me you can reach out at michaelbkopans@gmail.com.
I’ll be sure to put that into the show notes. I am looking forward to all of the spam emails I get for sharing my personal email with the world.
And even a greater waste of time than actually sending me money to advertise with me is to hit “subscribe” so you can be sure to get that annoying reminder that I have a new episode each week so you can waste more of your time listen to additional episodes as I attempt to explain to you why you’ll NEVER be a millionaire.
So, hit subscribe if you want that weekly confidence booster.
OKAY! My promise for today. My aim, my focus is to bring to you over 30 ideas for making, earning or saving $1,000 so you can set it into an ENVELOPE, as an emergency fund. Before you attempt to pay off your debt, because let’s face, you’re never going to do it, I encourage you to get a little money into an envelope to ward off anyone who tries to surprise you and take your money and derail your efforts to be successful in your debt payoff phase.
It is your own personal, self-funded insurance policy if you will. It’s like a bug or mosquito repellent for when you sit outside to get some sun.
Does it cover all emergencies? NO! Does it cover most? Probably. I think very few of us on a regular basis have emergencies larger than $1,000. Occasionally…sure. AC goes out completely. Car breaks down entirely. A LARGE medical bill.
But, most emergencies are typically covered by $1,000.
6 Guidelines I want to share that I put together as sort of a framework behind this. I believe guidelines and personal rules or laws for ourselves are SO important! They set up perimeters and act as a compass for the MANY adult decisions we not only HAVE to make, yet, COULD make.
I HATE options. I do my best to eliminate possibilities so I can get to business and get into action mode.
So, 6 guidelines.
One – don’t accept underpaid employment for these next 30 days. Other than your current employment. What do I mean – I want you to aim for a job that pays between 15 and 30 dollars an hour, minimum! We are aiming for QUICK! And the higher you can find, the quicker you get to $1,000.
Secondly, I encourage jobs that traditionally get tips! A job where, if you offer outstanding service someone is inspired to slide extra money across the table or to recommend your service so you can help more people and make more money.
Third, DON’T spend money to make money! First off, I HATE that expression! Is it true sometimes? Of course. But, not for this. Next 30 days we are aiming for…yes, quick! We are NOT building up a business in 30 days. We are looking to get $1,000 into an envelope.
I don’t want you buying things to make money. There is an exception which I’ll discuss briefly but, for the most part, nothing that requires spending money.
Number four, only accept employer BY THE HOUR as much as possible so, the more you work the more you get paid. I don’t want you accepting jobs where it may seem like a lot of money until you realize it takes like 3 days to do, bring your hourly total to like $3/hour.
Make sure you are accepting jobs that pay $15 or MORE an hour. There are exceptions, obviously if you can calculate an exact time and match this up to a high payback.
Number 5, anything you earn from what we are about to discuss goes ONLY to your $1,000 emergency fund.
Look! Some of y’all are going to have some circumstances arise the next 30 days. Rent is due and you can’t pay it. You missed a car payment. Etc. And hear me quickly, I am NOT suggesting you skip paying for those if there is no other option BUT… if ANYTHING comes up in the next 30 days, I want you to search as MANY options as possible before you even consider touching this money.
This work and this money is FOR the emergency fund! Seek options first.
And lastly number 6, I want you to make cuts prior to what I am going to suggest.
Look, I understand. Most of you will most likely need to at some point create a greater income. I know that day is coming, if it hasn’t already. But, this process is HARD! And if you could save your $1,000 emergency fund by just making some simple tweaks in the budget this month, do it!
Do it first!
Alright, those are the 5 perimeters I used when compiling this list.
Next and really quickly, because this episode is ALL about quick!
What is an emergency? For those who don’t know. An emergency fund is the money or…fund, you set aside for… you guessed it, emergencies.
I always like to hope that my listeners already know common sense stuff like this but, hey, I’ve been there my friend. It wasn’t all so long ago that something like an emergency fund would have been a foreign concept.
But today, outside of the blessings God offers my life and my family from frequent faithfulness in tithing, the emergency fund is the next best thing!
What it does, it wards off the bad guys and bad girls. Almost magically.
I remember when my wife and I put together our first emergency fund around 2018-2019. Prior to the emergency fund it felt like every day was an emergency. A crisis.
Tires need replaced. Something major with the car. A large, unexpected medical bill. AC issues. Home issues.
And yet all of sudden, as soon as we compiled the emergency fund, those things seemed to just…go away.
Now, we’ve had our emergency fund a LONG time, and we have now bumped ours up to the 3-6 month fund however, I don’t pretend that those things actually go away.
Life still happens. Problems still happen.
But you know what, most of those problems, don’t cost more than 1000 bucks.
And that 1000 bucks gives you just enough time to pay off your debt and move on with your financial journey as you begin to accumulate wealth and head down the path to financial independence and freedom and all of the things you want with money!
The emergency fund is that protection from the unexpected. Because unexpected happens all…the…time!
That’s enough of that explanation. And unfortunately I am nearing the end of the time I prefer to spend on an episode.
You can hear me speak more on emergency funds in episode 2 – 8 Financial Goals to Set for 2023.
Okay, here’s what I am going to do. I am going to dive into the first 5 or so and then we’ll continue this conversation into a part 2, deal?
Alright, here we go!
30 or more ideas for saving a $1,000 emergency fund in the next 30 days.
Number 1 – Dog walk. There are MILLIONS of people who have dogs and MILLIONS of people, seemingly invest a TON of money in their dogs. I guarantee you…someone needs you to walk their dog.
Number 2 – go figure, dog…sit! Have you ever spoken to someone who dog sits? They make a KILLLING! I want to say someone told me once they make like $75 a day to dog sit which typically involves letting the dog out in the morning and the afternoon to feed them and let them use the bathroom and play with them for a little bit.
That’s pretty sweet!
I was on a facebook group the other day and I read where a young lady said she makes $125 A DAY!
And, often these people encourage you to stay at their house. Yes please!
Number 3 – and this is for those of you with access to a decent sized truck. Take things to the dump for people. Is this genius or what?
I heard a guy on the local facebook group a month ago advertise not only this, but he offered to take old, free things from you. Free of charge to come get it. I can only imagine what he did with the old things and the money he made.
But, I know for myself, I actually need to higher someone like this to take an old grill to the dump. The previous owner was a jerk and left his for me to deal with. Thanks… you little jerk.
Home alone reference.
Charge people an amount to take their old stuff to the dump. I can’t imagine the treasures you may find.
Number 4 – photographer. And actually I have a few ideas for this one. First off… NEVER too many photographers in the world. Truly. I know some photographers HATE me for saying this but, it’s true. Especially during holidays, weddings, etc. There are SO many opportunities to take photos.
A person will hire you to take photos during a special event like a graduation. Maybe a family reunion.
Now, I will add, I think you need to be honest with people. If you are not a professional photographer, just be honest about it. Hey, I’ve got a very nice iphone, however, I would be happy to snap some pics for you during your family reunion.
Don’t show up for a photo session with an iphone. And DON’T go out and buy a $1,000 camera!
That was not my point!
OKay. Ladies and gentle, I HAVE to end this episode. I’m sorry!
Ya’ll know I keep it to around 10 minutes and I”m pretty sure I’ve already surpassed that, SO.
I’ll be back for a part 2, I PROMISE! I have 26 more ideas to share!
I’ll try to release these together so you don’t have to wait super long for the list!
Always remember, at the end of the day, I want you to win!
I believe in you. Someone in your life believes in you.
I know today you may feel like a loser. You aren’t the first and trust me, you won’t be the last.
But if you know how to lose guess what, you know how to win. So go out there and win my friends.
Go out there and have Success one win at a time. Go have Success…by 1,000 wins.
